Polly Shindler

Polly Shindler was born in 1977 in New Haven, Connecticut, USA. She graduated with an MFA from the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York in 2011. She was one of New York Magazine’s ’30 Artists to Watch in 2012’ and had her first solo exhibition in 2016 at Moira Fitzsimmons Arons Art Gallery, Hamden, Connecticut, USA.

Shindler creates small, intense paintings of interior domestic spaces, filled with furniture, objects and artwork. Interested in investigating notions of solitude and retreat, the spaces depicted in Shindler’s work are fictional, sometimes with an aspirational element. She focuses primarily on composition and formal concepts, exploring colour, pattern and texture in an architectural and art historical context. Incorporating both classical styles and modern designs in the spaces she constructs, Shindler’s paintings also often feature or reference recognisable classic design pieces or paintings by well-known twentieth-century masters.

Shindler has exhibited widely in the USA, including at Freight + Volume, New York (2020); The Yard, Brooklyn, New York (2019); Kaller Fine Arts, Washington D.C. (2018); The Institute Library, New Haven, Connecticut (2017); and the Low Museum of Contemporary Culture, Atlanta, Georgia (2015).

Polly Shindler lives and works in New Haven, Connecticut, USA. She exhibited at Cristea Roberts Gallery for the first time in 2021 as part of the exhibition Just what is it…?.
