Zsofia Schweger

Zsofia Schweger was born in 1989 in Szeged, Hungary. She studied at Wellesley College, MA, USA and the Slade School of Art, London, graduating with an MA in 2015. In 2016 she had her first solo exhibition at Griffin Gallery, London, and was selected for Bloomberg New Contemporaries. The following year Schweger was included in Forbes 30 under 30 Europe, 2017, arts category.

Schweger’s practice is informed by her experience of moving countries; she is interested in human relationships to place and the notions of home and belonging. In her paintings of domestic and public interiors, Schweger uses reductive paint application, flat panels of colour and a muted palette in order to express a sense of both alienation and comfort.

Schweger’s work has been exhibited widely in the UK and internationally, including Piero Atchugarry Gallery, Miami, USA (2020), SITE131, Dallas, USA (2019), Inda Gallery, Budapest, Hungary (2018), Ludwig Museum of Contemporary Art, Budapest, Hungary (2017), Sapar Contemporary, New York, USA (2017), Lundgren Gallery, Palma, Spain (2017), Bluecoat, Liverpool (2016); and Royal Academy of Arts, London (2016).

Zsofia Schweger lives and works in London, UK. She exhibited at Cristea Roberts Gallery for the first time in 2021 as part of the exhibition Just what is it…?.
