David Hockney

New Prints

Between the 1st July and 14th August, the Alan Cristea Gallery will be exhibiting a series of fourteen new etchings by David Hockney. Printed and editioned over the last year in Los Angeles, by Maurice Payne, this will be their first and exclusive showing in the UK.

The subjects - Portraits, Plants, Chairs and Dogs - are all familiar images within his printed repertoire, however this series represents a return to the styles and forms of classical etching. The portraits are intimate and brutally honest. In 'Soft Celia', he captures his favourite model, this time in an elegant and thoughtful pose. The chairs are bold and intricate. In two of them, Van Gogh Chair black and white, Hockney again plays with perspective, placing the chair seemingly at odds with its surroundings. The flowers are a mixture of delicate lines and bold strokes, each one capturing the essential qualities of its subject, be it a Cactus or a Peony.

Each image in this new series is defined by Hockney's deft use of the etched line and his skill as a draughtsman, and provides a further insight into the artist's personal and artistic lifestyle.
