Howard Hodgkin
A new exhibition at the Alan Cristea Gallery featuring Howard Hodgkin's new hand-coloured etchings, made by the artist during a concentrated bout of activity in 2000 and 2001. These nine images were commissioned and are published exclusively by the Alan Cristea Gallery.
Such are the labour-intensive and time-consuming demands of Hodgkin's methods of etching, that the artist swore that his previous major cycle of prints - the four 'Venetian' images made in 1994-95 - would be his last. However, he returned to 107 Workshop in Wiltshire and, along with the guidance of the master printer Jack Shirreff, has produced nine intimate and poignant small-scale works.
The exhibition will be accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue and will be directly followed by an exhibition of Hodgkins's four new large etchings - Into the Woods.
