Julian Opie
Beginning 10 September, the Alan Cristea Gallery will be holding a major exhibition of new and recent work by the acclaimed British artist Julian Opie. The show will include prints, paintings and films all based around Opie's most recent imagery.
Following on from his installation at Sadler's Wells theatre, London and at the Museum of Modern Art, Chicago, Opie has created a pair of large-scale prints based around water and swimmers. Entitled We lounged by the pool and We swam in the sea, they are part of a whole body of work inspired by his recent trip to Bali. These will be accompanied by a group of smaller silkscreened coloured panels of tropical fish entitled We swam amongst the fishes which will dominate an entire wall of the gallery.
Arising from his commission last year to create a 70-metre long frieze for Lucky Strike B.A.R Honda Formula One, the Alan Cristea Gallery published a series of six Lambda prints of race tracks linked to portraits of their team drivers. All six of these prints will be hung alongside a large-scale racing driver painting and will be complemented by a racing track film.
The exhibition will be accompanied by a catalogue devised by the artist and will be widely advertised on double-decker buses across the West End.
