POP Portfolios

British Pop Art in the 1960s successfully blurred the boundaries between what constituted a fine art work, and mass produced objects. This was particularly true of printmaking, where artists began to use pre-existing commercial techniques such as silkscreen, in a completely innovative and ground-breaking way.

The Alan Cristea Gallery is exhibiting an important group of print portfolios by the core group of British artists from that period; Peter Blake, Patrick Caulfield, Richard Hamilton, David Hockney, Allen Jones, Eduardo Paolozzi, Dieter Roth, Colin Self and Joe Tilson.

The exhibition will include over thirty works, each one a classic example not only of printmaking, but also of presentation. In many cases the way these series were presented, in their own distinct packaging, was as important to the final artwork as the prints themselves.

Amongst others, the exhibition will include Allen Jones's Life Class and Shoe Box, Patrick Caulfield's classic suite illustrations to The Poems of Jules Laforgue, Joe Tilson's Fragments of an Oneric Alphabet, Five Tyres Remoulded by Richard Hamilton and Eduardo Paolozzi's General Dynamic F.U.N.
