Antoni Tàpies

Twenty New Prints

The Alan Cristea Gallery will exhibit, for the first time, a series of twenty new original prints in various sizes by Antoni Tàpies. Tàpies has been working on these prints for the past year in Barcelona where they have been printed.

For this new body of work Tàpies continues his perpetual questioning of everyday objects and creates out of them objects of contemplation. He imbues them with a meaning that surpasses their everyday functions although his reverence for them is tempered by humour and irony. His expressionistic means of presentation doesn't hide their intrinsic character. Indeed it is heightened by the tactile qualities of the printing media he has used - combinations of aquatint, etching, lift-ground, carborundum, and silkscreen.

The complexity of the printing techniques give the prints a surface quality which has only previously been present in his paintings.
