Ali Kazim
New watercolours depicting solitary figures and circus acts will be exhibited together with a series of new etchings, each work illustrating a different letter from the Urdu alphabet. Kazim, who is based in Lahore, invites the audience to explore the rich history and culture of South Asia through the Urdu language, whilst also highlighting the urgency of maintaining a connection to our native languages in an era of migration and exile.
The artist will also be the subject of a new episode of the Cristea Roberts Gallery podcast, Making a Mark, which explores contemporary artists' approach to drawing and printmaking.

Ali Kazim: Alphabet Book | Urdu Qaida
The opening of the exhibition on Thursday 3 September, 6pm, also marks the UK launch of Ali Kazim: Alphabet Book | Urdu Qaida, a collaboration between Ali Kazim and curator Hammad Nasar, which will be available to purchase on the evening.
Urdu alphabet books or qaidas sit in the school bags of millions of children in the sub-continent, and among its diaspora.
The 144-page book, written in both English and Urdu, includes an essay by Nasar.
