Georg Baselitz Geschichte
Geschichte, the German word for history or tale, forms the thematic foundation for our third publication made with Georg Baselitz. The book details Baselitz’s engagement with the concept of history, tracing how he reflects upon and reworks motifs that have long defined his practice. Central among these are the eagle and the human form, including that of his wife and muse, Elke, subjects through which Baselitz weaves together personal memory and broader historical definitions. For Baselitz, history is neither stagnant nor distant; rather it remains active, rendered legible in his works through repetition, subversion and close attention.
This publication includes an introductory essay by art critic Alastair Sooke, alongside more than twenty reproductions of the etchings and aquatints made by the artist between 2021 and 2024.
