Ian Davenport Pathway
“The juxtaposition between organisation and disarray within Davenport’s work is powerful and striking […] Regularity is opposed with rapture. Reason is set against ecstasy.” Alastair Sooke
This hard-back publication, which includes never before published studio photography, explores a significant body of works on paper by Ian Davenport. This includes a series of large-scale prints dominated by the structures of light and shadow that create a tension and drama not previously seen in the artist’s work, and Davenport’s largest ever works on paper made using his technique of applying jets of colour to form densely layered compositions.
From the components that make up Davenport’s pictures to what draws the artist to printmaking and the musicality that defines the way that Davenport thinks about art, an essay by art critic and writer Alastair Sooke offers a fresh interpretation of Davenport’s practice.
