Georg Baselitz Devotion
Devotion, which traces Georg Baselitz's interest in portraiture, explores a major body of work by the artist, which was presented in his first exhibition of prints in the UK in over 25 years. For Baselitz, printmaking is as important a part of his artistic practice as painting, drawing and sculpture.
Devotion features 32 etchings based on self-portraits of artists that Baselitz admires or is influenced by, including Frank Auerbach, Cecily Brown, Tracey Emin, Erich Heckel, Joan Mitchell, Robert Rauschenberg, Mark Rothko and Andy Warhol, amongst others.
This selection of both Baselitz’s predecessors and peers offer us an insight into the mind of the artist; each self-portrait has been carefully selected and reimagined in Baselitz’s own unique style. The publication features an introduction by gallery founder and co-director Alan Cristea and a text by Baselitz in both German and English.
