Patrick Heron Shaping Colour: Prints 1956–1999

Shaping Colour is the first publication to survey the full evolution of Heron’s graphic work, bringing together almost 50 years of printmaking beginning with his first full experimentation in the medium in 1956.

Heron made a considerable quantity of prints, in a variety of media, intermittently throughout his life. Together with his paintings, Heron’s screenprints, etchings and lithographs explored scale, composition and, most importantly, the interaction of colour. Shaping Colour traces the development of his highly individual style of abstract art.

The book includes an essay by art historian and art critic Martin Gayford, surveying Heron’s graphic works, including the final work he made in 1999 for The Brushworks Series, completed on the morning of the day that he died.
