Paul Winstanley Reprise
“The image is abraded, it disintegrates, all sorts of interesting incidents occur, though you can still see the shadows of trees, rocks, water, mountains, all the elements of the image.”
Reprise explores a body of work by Paul Winstanley that appropriates images of historical paintings depicting Alpine landscapes. Winstanley incorporates these images into a photogravure process and prints them with re-imagined colour and sense of light. Using processes of wax resist, the artist degrades the images, impacting their perfection and historical authenticity.
In an interview with the artist, discover Winstanley’s interest in how pictures mythologise reality; the aesthetics of the sublime; his choice of colour and how he makes his prints through a process of decay and reinvention.
