Marie Harnett
This Online Viewing room presents new drawings by Marie Harnett which celebrate intimate, fleeting moments of drama, beauty and emotion from contemporary film.
Marie Harnett (b. 1983) is known for her highly detailed, meticulous drawings, derived from film stills. She transforms a digital split second, by removing colour and taking the still out of its narrative context. The brief glimpse Harnett offers into a scene presents an emotion or history that is suddenly intimate and familiar to us.
Harnett's skillful draughtsmanship and attention to detail sees her focus on every aspect of pose, light and texture. Her new drawings derive from period dramas, and include a focus on Dutch interior domestic scenes, such as Perfect, 2020. The new works, never before exhibited, include a number of drawings made in portrait format, a move away from Harnett's usual landscape format. She has also continued to develop new overlap drawings, where she takes two stills and superimposes one on top of the other, such as Dance Hall and Approach, 2019. Harnett uses her source imagery to create a unique image that takes on its own life and a new story.
In July 2020 Harnett was scheduled to have an exhibition of new drawings at Cristea Roberts Gallery. This exhibition will now take place in late 2020. Email info@cristearoberts.com if you would like to receive further information, later in the year, about this show.
In Summer 2019 Harnett completed a residency at The Josef and Anni Albers Foundation, Connecticut. Recent exhibitions featuring her work include Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh; Städtische Galerie Bietigheim-Bissingen, Germany, and Haugesund Billedgalleri, Haugesund, Norway.
Her works are housed in the permanent collections of British Museum, London; Government Art Collection, London; Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh; Edinburgh College of Art, Edinburgh; Städtische Galerie Bietigheim-Bissingen, Germany; Yale Centre for British Art, Connecticut; and Museum of Modern Art, New York.
