Joe Tilson
Cultural history and ecological concerns, themes transcending time and cutting across cultures, defined Joe Tilson’s (1928 - 2023) work for over sixty years. In the 1990s Joe Tilson's profound and intimate involvement with Italian history and culture came to the forefront of his practice and the work made in the final two decades of his life was all connected to Venice in particular.
Each print in the series available below depicts Venetian church façades paired with bold geometric patterns of the city’s stone and tiled walls and floors. Defying traditional printmaking methods, each work is hand-coloured and features a combination of carborundum, etching, aquatint, inkjet and screenprint.
