Jim Dine: Hearts

    Jim Dine: Hearts

A new series of works on paper by Jim Dine revel in the motif of the heart. Bombay on the Nile, Canticle of Bounty, The Haunted Voice and The Troubadour, made in 2025, are a combination of woodcut, each with extensive hand-painting, that encapsulate the artist’s vigorous mark-making and riotous application of colour.

This new series of work was created by the artist with his long-term collaborators, Gabi Pechmann and Christoph Chavanne at Steindruck Studio in Austria. Jim Dine who lives and works between Washington and Paris, travelled to Apetlon in Austria specifically to work with the master printers on the pictured large-scale works.

Dine’s titles are evocative of religious ballads and epic verse: Canticle of Bounty, 2025, suggests a song of praise from biblical texts; The Troubadour, 2025 alludes to the role of the poet or bard in French medieval courts, who specifically sang on the theme of courtly love and romance.

Dine, a prolific poet as well as an artist, uses the heart as a vehicle for creative expression, a timeless symbol that reappears across his oeuvre.
