Street Gift Blue and Street Gift Pink

Cristea Roberts Gallery is delighted to launch two new limited edition silkscreen prints depicting stained-glass windows by Clare Woods (b. 1972).

Hand-printed in editions of 25, each screenprint features a rich colour palette of pinks, reds, blues, and greens. Focusing on the motif of the window for the first time in her prints, Street Gift Blue and Street Gift Pink draw upon the artist’s interest in glass, both its symbolic and material qualities.
The prints were developed in response to the setting of Woods’ current solo exhibition at Pitzhanger Manor, a former home of eighteenth-century architect Sir John Soane. Central to Soane’s design of the building and its interiors was the use of natural light, carefully modulated or manipulated through tinted glass and mirrors, some of which remain on display today.

Woods’ screenprints depict layers of colour that burst through the glass, each enclosed by the geometric shapes of a leaded windowpane. Tightly and intensely cropped, our view is contained, yet hints at an outside landscape. Each window becomes a portal between interior and exterior worlds, a thin veneer between the familiar and unfamiliar. These near-dreamlike scenes become foreboding, as Woods allows for new ways of seeing the ordinary.
These two new works are on display at Pitzhanger alongside examples of Woods’ other graphic works together with new hand-painted collages and paintings, and are being released on a ‘first-come, first-served’ basis.
