Yinka Shonibare CBE Prints

This colourful, small format publication presents Yinka Shonibare’s first two print projects with Cristea Roberts Gallery. A text by co-director David Cleaton-Roberts describes both the subject matter of the artist’s prints and guides the reader through the way Shonibare constructs his pictorial surface using multiple layers and combinations of materials. One of these materials is Dutch wax printed cotton, which has been hand-applied to the spine of each booklet.

This cotton, which is the same Shonibare uses in his artworks is known as an ‘African print’. Inspired by Indonesian batik, the print was originally manufactured by the Dutch in the nineteenth-century, and later exported to West Africa. Shonibare uses it in his work as a symbol for the intricate ties between Europe and Africa.

The patterns on each booklet cover are slightly different, making each individual booklet unique.
