Yinka Shonibare Ritual Ecstasy of the Modern
The gallery is closed over the holiday period. Any book orders placed between 18 December - 4 January will not be dispatched until early January.
Ritual Ecstasy of the Modern is the first book dedicated solely to Yinka Shonibare’s printmaking practice. Find out about the complex way the artist makes his woodblock prints and hand-painted sculptures, and about his subject matter which explores the themes of race, class, constructions of cultural identity and more recently ecology.
Each series of work made since his first project with Cristea Roberts Gallery in 2017, is explored in an interview with writer and art critic, Charlotte Mullins. Shonibare discusses how his work is informed by art history, from African ritualistic objects to Hogarth, Picasso and the modernists who appropriated Arican art in the early twentieth century.
Discover why Dutch batik fabric continues to be recurrent motif for everything Shonibare wants to say about identity, politics, colonialism, and postcolonialism, and how the artist uses it to push the boundaries of his printmaking practice.
